Jan Cherim is the Managing Director of The Demerara River Company. He is also Managing Partner and co-founder of Financial Access Capital Partners, and a Director of several SEAF private equity funds. He has 25 years of corporate and investment banking experience in Europe, the Far East, Africa and the Caribbean. He has advised corporate, financial sector and sovereign clients in the areas of financing, strategic development, management organisation, balance sheet restructuring, privatisation, as well as risk management, governance and internal audit concerns. He led the MBO of Financial Access from ING Bank in late 2006, a business he had helped to launch in the early 1990s.
At ING, Mr Cherim was a member of the Management Committee of ING Bank’s Wholesale International (Banking) unit based in Amsterdam, and Head of ING’s Financial Institutions business, with global responsibility for products, including the lending, payments, securities services, trade finance, and advisory practice for financial sector clients. He was Country Manager for ING in Thailand, as well as Regional Director for Africa. He has served as Director or Boardroom adviser to banks in Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Angola and Qatar.
Mr. Cherim set up Asset Management companies for ING in China (PE), Thailand (mutual funds) and Poland (PE), as well as launching ING’s first Emerging Markets debt fund. He is currently a Director of two emerging markets-orientated Private Equity funds managed by SEAF.
Before joining ING in 1990, he worked in international corporate finance at S.G. Warburg & Co. in London (now UBS Investment Banking), and at the World Bank in Washington.
Mr Cherim was educated at The Johns Hopkins University (USA) and the London School of Economics (UK). He is a Dutch citizen, married with 4 children and resident in Amsterdam.
